這詞源出魯迅先生的《阿Q正傳》。其中一節是阿Q被惡人打罵一頓後無力還手，卻念念有詞說「現今竟然兒子打老子，真不知是甚麼世界。」怎料這話卻被惡人聽到，於是阿Q再被毒打一輪 。

『阿Q精神』是一個貶詞，嘲笑人無力面對挑戰、卻選擇幻想，使出精神勝利法。此法即時能舒緩一下情緒，但卻因脫離現實，令人忘卻了去思考真正的解決辦法。

不過從另一個角度看，這樣做也不全然是壞的。在無計可施的困局裏，能舒緩一下情緒，並冷靜下來後想想真正的應對辦法，也未嘗不是一件好事。情況就像心理學上的『防禦機制』(defense mechanism)。
